A weekly invitation to transform from the inside out.

Happy Seed-Day!

It has been a while. The Seed is back, and it will arrive every week from here.

Here's an idea (The Seed), a way to go deeper (The Soil), and a journal prompt (The Root) to explore.

I. The Seed

The swell does not send an invitation. It arrives.

Readiness is not something you summon in the moment. It is the sum of a thousand quiet mornings nobody saw. The paddling before the wave. The saving before the storm. The stillness before the noise.

Last week, I got gout for the first time in seven years. My body rang a bell loud enough to wake me. It was not punishment. It was a message: you drifted. Begin again.

So I began again. Ten minutes of sitting. A page of writing. Eating mindfully. Small practices, kept daily, are how you stay ready for the big moments you cannot schedule.

Always be ready. Not tense. Not braced. Ready the way water is ready. Clear, patient, and willing to move the moment the call comes.

II. The Soil

This week, one story with two doors. Walk through either.

Read: the life of Jay Moriarity, the Santa Cruz surfer who spent his teenage years training body and mind for Mavericks, one of the heaviest waves on earth. He treated readiness as a daily practice, not a moment of courage.

Watch: the trailer for Chasing Mavericks (2012), the film of that story. An old surfer agrees to train a boy for a wave everyone says he has no business riding. The wave is not the point. The preparation is.

Then sit with this:

you do not prepare because you know what is coming. You prepare because you do not.

III. The Root

What is "the wave" I say I am waiting for? If it came tomorrow, would I be ready?

Which daily practice did I quietly set down? What would make picking it up again so easy I could not refuse?

Until next week,

Jay Sueno

PS - There is a longer, more personal letter behind this one. The Long Paddle is my weekly writing on business, family, health, and building a life in Siargao, and this week's tells the story behind this volume. It is free at jaysueno.substack.com.
